I Tried 5 Tallow Balms So You Don't Have To

I've been through more tallow balms than I'd like to admit. Only one actually made a difference.

ABOUT ME

Sarah Lindgren

Sarah Lindgren

Lifelong dry skin & rosacea warrior.

I've been a bit of a tallow connoisseur for almost two years now.

I've tried just about everything — Etsy jars, the big-name brands, the whipped ones, the honey ones, the ones that smell like a barn.

Most of them blur together. Here's where I finally landed.

HOW I TESTED

Every balm on this list was used daily for at least three weeks. I scored them on four things:

ScentDoes it smell like something I'd actually want on my face?
AbsorptionHow quickly does it sink in? Does it sit on top or actually absorb?
ResultsDid anything actually change beyond moisture? Tone, texture, glow, fine lines.
ValueIs the price fair for what you're getting?

HONORABLE MENTIONS

TALLOWED TRUTH

F Balm

Most Hyped on Social Media

$45 CAD · 2 oz · Beef tallow · Non-whipped

All over social media right now. Five clean ingredients, no fillers. Texture is dense and needs warming before applying and noticeably heavier than anything bison-based.

Hydration is solid and the jar lasts. But like most basic beef tallow balms, it moisturizes and that's it. No visible change in tone or texture after three weeks.

ANCESTRAL COSMETICS

Tallow & Honey Balm

Best Clean Ingredient List

$36 · 2 oz · Beef tallow · Non-whipped

Irish grass-fed beef tallow, raw honey, beeswax, essential oils. Genuinely short ingredient list. Spreads easy and hydration lasts. But the scent is strong very herbal, patchouli-heavy. Not for everyone.

Good basic option if scent doesn't bother you. Moisture only, no visible results beyond that.

THE REVIEWS

#3 — PRIMALLY PURE

Everything Balm

Most Popular

$38 · 1 oz · Beef tallow · Non-whipped

Probably the most well-known tallow brand.

Beef tallow, olive oil, emu oil, beeswax, some lavender and tea tree. It's thick, thicker than I expected. Takes a while to sink in.

I ended up using it only at night because it felt heavy under sunscreen in the morning.

For basic hydration it's solid. Dry patches cleared up, redness calmed within a week.

But no change in tone, texture, or lines. It's doing one job — moisture — and doing it fine.

What I love:

  • Calms redness fast
  • Clean simple ingredients
  • Good for sensitive skin

What I don't:

  • Thick and slow to absorb
  • Heavy under makeup
  • $38 for 1oz with no actives feels steep

#2 — GRAZLY

Whipped Bison Tallow & Manuka Honey

Best Bison on a Budget

$36 · 2 oz · Bison tallow · Whipped

Tried this because it's bison tallow and I wanted to compare.

The Manuka honey is a nice touch and the whipped texture is light and easy to apply. Because it's bison, it does absorb faster than the beef tallow balms on this list.

But it's whipped and that means a 2oz jar is partly air. It goes faster than it should. And while the bison base is nice, there's nothing else in it beyond tallow and honey.

Hydration is good. No visible change in tone or texture after three weeks though.

It proved to me that the tallow source alone isn't the whole story.

What I love:

  • Bison tallow absorbs faster
  • Manuka honey is a nice addition
  • Light texture

What I don't:

  • Whipped — you're partly paying for air
  • No visible results beyond hydration

🏆 Top Pick

#1 — PLAIN RITUAL

Omega Regenerative Balm

Best Overall · Best Results

$33 · 1 oz · Bison tallow · Non-whipped

This is the one that ended my search.

It absorbs instantly, no film, no residue, nothing sitting on top.

Two weeks in, my skin tone started evening out.

I noticed an actual glow building, the kind I'd given up expecting from a tallow balm.

The fine lines around my eyes softened.

That caught me off guard because nothing else on this list came close to doing that.

They use neroli essential oil and I can barely smell the tallow. If scent has ever been a dealbreaker, this solves it.

Every other balm I tested moisturized. This one actually changed how my skin looks.

What I love:

  • Absorbs instantly
  • Actual visible results (glow, evening, softening)
  • Scent is beautiful
  • Bison tallow is noticeably lighter than beef

What I don't:

  • Child-proof lids never close completely so always a risk of breaking
  • Wish they sold a bigger size

WHAT I LEARNED

Two things became clear.

Bison tallow absorbs faster. Feels lighter. You notice it first use.

But that alone didn't change my skin. Grazly proved it. Great base. Three weeks later — just moisturized.

Plain Ritual was different.

Glow came back. Skin evened out. Lines softened.

I think it's what they add alongside the tallow.

Everything else on this list? Just moisture.

IF THIS SOUNDS FAMILIAR

If you've been cycling through tallow balms that all do the same thing, moisturize but never actually change anything, this is the one that changed it for me.

I paid full price for mine months ago. Right now they're running an Easter sale so you'd get a better deal than I did.

@Megan Lawson yes girl day & night. I thought the same thing like how different can it really be but this is like… actually lightweight?? it sinks in right away and doesn't leave that film. I can't go back to beef tallow now honestly
